Serendipity Saucy Spreads began as a collaborative effort of two Santa Cruz entrepreneurs, Kristen and Lynette Cederquist, who have a passion for creating unique jams, jellies, and preserves. They have recently turned a longtime family tradition of preserving into a successful jam-making business. Lynette began making jam with her mother and grandmother many years ago. She has fond memories of waking up on summer mornings to aromatic boxes of fresh-picked fruit, and watching as bubbling cauldrons of sugar and fruit magically became sparkling jars of jam.
This family tradition was embraced by her daughter Kristen, whose first experience as a jam maker was climbing the family plum tree to reach the topmost fruit for her grandma when she was five years old. She too was mesmerized by the transformation that occurred when fruit and sugar were boiled to perfection, creating a tasty treat that could be enjoyed in the months to come. For the past 25 years, Kristen and Lynette have carried on the tradition of food preservation.
Over the years, their gift baskets and handcrafted jams and jellies have been a huge hit with family, friends, and colleagues that prompted them to say, “Someday you should go into the jam business!” With the growing trend of eating fresh and local, and with the prompting of friends, “someday” arrived in 2009 when Serendipity Saucy Spreads became a reality. What started as a hobby, passionately sharing part of their family’s heritage, has blossomed into a community-wide endeavor, with many outstanding participants and recipients.
