It was time again for Cooking for Solutions at the Monterey Bay Aquarium which also meant celebrating our two year anniversary on the main deck, over looking the ocean.  Last weekend on the Monterey Bay could not have been more beautiful.  The weather predictions said to expect heavy cold drizzly fog and it seemed early on that the weather report was going to dead on however, mid morning the sun was shining and the temperature was perfect. A few weeks ago we received an email from Whole Foods asking if we would be interested in doing a presentation at this year’s Cooking for Solutions.  At first we were completely terrified because talking in front of a group of people seemed very intimidating.  However, after giving it some thought, I remembered that you have to confront a fear to overcome it.  A reply email was sent back saying, “Yes, count us in.  We’d love to give a presentation!”  We decided 30 minutes really wasn’t long enough to make a batch of jam.   Instead, we choose to  show how we use our jams in our home.  One jam, three ways. Cooking for Solutions 2010

Last Saturday on the Monterey Bay could not have been more beautiful.  The sun was shining and the temperature was perfect.  This particular Saturday morning mom and I found ourselves, along with about eight other local artisan companies and organic growers, on the back deck of the Monterey Bay Aquarium at the Whole Foods Marketplace for this year’s Cooking for Solutions: Celebrating Sustainability.

We arrived at 8:00 am to set up our table and we were greeted by lots of happy and excited people but also to find the most beautiful view of the bay for our back drop.  By about 9:30 we were set up and had a moment to ourselves.  I said to mom, “This time last year would you have ever imagined that we’d be celebrating our first year anniversary here?”  We both laughed and said on one hand no, but then looking at what we’ve done this year, it made perfect sense.  We were honored to be in the company of Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company, Rustic Bakery, Frog Hollow Farm, and Verve Coffee Roasters, just to name a few.

Before the doors opened we were able to go around and meet all of the other companies participating.  Early on we met the boys from Verve Coffee Roasters in Capitola who made the tent smell heavenly with their coffee and brought us freshly roasted and brewed cups of coffee before the crowds hit.  Being from Santa Cruz we knew of Verve because we use their coffee, but we had no idea that knew us and loved our jams.  Then we made our way over to Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese.  If you’ve not heard us say it before, the blues from Point Reyes Farmstead takes our Spiced Carrot Jam and Fig Spreads to whole new level!  It was so amazing to get to meet all of the people behind these wonderful companies, plus we were able to sample some of the goodies they brought.  Here are a few of our other favorites from the day.  Handcrafted flatbread crackers and Cranberry, Rosemary, & Pecan Pan Forte Crostini from Rustic Bakery and Frog Hollow Farm’s fresh Brooks cherries, Nectarine Conserve, and Nectarine & Plum Conserve.  It was all so good!

For this event we decided to share a range of flavors that included our Strawberry Balsamic Preserves, Spiced Carrot, Apple Jam with Port, Meyer Lemon Marmalade, and our Caramelized Onion, Fig, & Balsamic Spread.  It was so much fun to see people getting excited about our jam as well as sharing our special Spiced Carrot Jam with those who had never experienced it before.  There were many who were weary of the carrot but after one taste most said, “Oh that IS really good!” We met a lot of wonderful people and hopefully continued on our journey of changing peoples perception of jam one jar at a time.

On that note, it’s time to get back to work but before we go we must thank everyone who has added a little Serendipity to their life in the past year and a BIG thank you to Whole Foods for inviting us to be apart of this great event!
